Some images from Sunday's Season Opener with Cycle Zirkus in Romerskirchen, Germany.

This issue comes at you on the heels of some back-to-back packed weeks.

Last week was all about the Wheelrunner OpeningCIOVITA opening & ride. There's a great blog post about the new shop & shop-in-shop below. If you're in Amsterdam or planning to visit, add Wheelrunner to your list!

Saturday was our 2nd time hosting a 12-Hour Alleycat stop at our office: we were a karaoke checkpoint. Always a blast!

Sunday, in a little village near Düsseldorf Cycle Zirkus Season Opener ride. Keep mid-April 2026 clear on your agenda and plan to join me there next year. What a fun time & beautiful surroundings!

As last issue was a bit of a rallying call, this issue more about the basics. I typically keep a weekly rhythm with relative ease with tips like these:

  1. 🦾 Leverage RSS from key publishers, blogs & other sites into a Slack channel solely of relevant articles. At Twotone, we effectively have our own OG Twitter stream of cycling-centered content across a number of markets & languages.
  2. 🔔 Subscribe & Auto-Archive to newsletters from anybody & everybody is doing something interesting. When the first issue arrives, make a rule in your inbox to archive it & add a label / place in a folder to read later. This keeps your inbox clean & organizes these valuable & interesting mailings to be read later
  3. 🔖 Bookmark on desktop & Mobile every interesting link / post you see (even on social media) with a tool like Pocket. When I'm preparing for an issue, I can simply scroll thru links I've saved over the week & review info to share with you
  4. 📬 Keep shipping on a regular basis. It's ok to drop the ball occasionally due to constraints, holidays or even lacking valuable content to share but consistency is key. If you go for weekly, monthly or even quarterly: don't break the chain!
  5. 🧠 Brainstorm on themes or topics throughout the week or month. I see a lot of 'news' and opinion pieces passing by all the time, it takes practice to pen a voice to cut through the noise. This issue I was inspired by Carolyn Yoo's guide on what to write about. If you have a newsletter or would like to, click through!

If you've been reading the Twotone newsletter for awhile & haven't forwarded it to a friend or a colleague, this would be an ideal issue to share. : )

Thank you for reading,

Jon

Introducing the NEW Lundi 20 Cargo

Personally, I've loved long tails since my kids were super small. I love to see this style of bike gain speed and can honestly say that the Lundi is the most thought out & versatile version I've seen. Learn more here.

AJA 40: How will new tariffs affect Silca, bike retailers, and customers?

AJA#40: How will new tariffs affect SILCA, bike retailers, & customers?
We had a whole suite of super nerdy and fun questions ready to ask Josh...and we will still ask them, next time. But we also wanted to know Josh’s thoughts about how the newly-announced tariffs might affect Silca, the businesses it buys from and sells to, and its customers. The resulting unscripted conversation is a must-listen.

Honestly, with headlines changing daily, its tough to pin down the real effects but you can count on Josh at SILCA to share honest insight for the industry. Listen here.

Award-Winning Motorcycle Documentary “Angels Of Dirt” Embarks on European Tour After U.S. Success
Angels Of Dirt, the powerful documentary directed by Wendy Schneider, will make its European debut in May following a successful run across the United States. The film is both a celebration of her legacy and a tribute to the resilience and rise of female riders in motorsports.

Not the typical 'bike' link here but a very riveting documentary and unique project for us here at Twotone. Click through to read about the tour and its stops in Portugal, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands!

How Komoot lost its way

How Komoot lost its way
Mere days after the announcement of acquisition by an Italian tech firm, the route-planning platform laid off 80% of its staff, and former employees fear for its future.

A long read from Suvi with quite a bit of engaging comments from users and former employees. To be honest, I'm personally still a bit shook up by this whole debacle. Needless to say, I just planned my route to my daughter's soccer game with Ride With GPS. The map looks great with the Wandrer.earth overlay too! And launching later today, Collaborative Route Planning! (refresh that link at 7am PST / 4pm CET)

The Brewing Transatlantic Tech War

The Brewing Transatlantic Tech War
How Silicon Valley got entangled in geopolitics—and lost.

"US Technology companies such as Alphabet, Meta, and OpenAI need to wake up to an unpleasant reality. By getting close to U.S. President Donald Trump, they risk losing access to one of their biggest markets: Europe." After my last issue here, I saw what I thought was an unsubscribe but was just a reader quitting Gmail. It's a trend I hear about more and more...

Skateboarding was Never a Brand Strategy

That's my friend James LaLonde's older brother Marko launching the "Ron Gap", circa 2000. In James' article he expands upon the idea that "drawing inspiration and trying to extract coolness. One respects the origin. The other commodifies it." Read the article here.

CIOVITA Lands in Amsterdam

Marking a New Chapter: CIOVITA Lands in Amsterdam
There’s a powerful energy that comes from a shared purpose, and at CIOVITA, that purpose has always been to inspire people to ride. Our recent partnership with Wheelrunner in Amsterdam marks an exciting new chapter in this journey. What began in Woodstock, Cape Town, now expands to a home away from home in Europe — a place where riders, dreamers, and doers can come together under one roof, united by a shared love of the road ahead. A New Hub Begins to Hum Saturday, the 5th of April, marked more than just the opening of a new store — it was the beginning of a new hub for Amsterdam’s cycling community. Wheelrunner, founded by Bas Rotgans, opened its doors to a vibrant and enthusiastic crowd. With a mission to create a space that blends high-performance cycling gear with a spirit of openness and connection, the store has already established itself as a key part of the local scene. More than just a retail space, Wheelrunner is a place where cyclists can tap into the knowledge of expert bike mechanics, seek advice, and immerse themselves in the culture of riding. For CIOVITA, it’s a perfect match — a place where our kit and our values can be experienced in person. The grand opening captured this shared spirit, setting the tone for a collaboration rooted in passion, people, and the pursuit of excellence. Woodstock To The World On Tuesday the 8th of April, we hosted a special evening at Wheelrunner — a momentous occasion not only for the brand but for everyone who has believed in our journey from the start. With CEO Andrew Gold and members of the CIOVITA team in attendance, it was an opportunity to share our story, our design philosophy, and our deep-rooted commitment to the new community within Amsterdam and Europe as a whole. As conversation flowed and connections were made, the room was filled with the unmistakable sense that something meaningful was beginning to take shape. This wasn’t just a store launch — it was a realisation of “Woodstock to the world” in action. A proud, palpable milestone that celebrated how far we’ve come and where we’re headed next. First Light, First Ride Wednesday morning, the 9th of April, saw the wheels of something new turning — literally. The very first Wheelrunner x CIOVITA community ride set off just after sunrise, weaving through Amsterdam and its surrounds. It was more than just a ride; it was a ritual in the making. Much like our weekly rides from our flagship store in Woodstock, this gathering was about more than kilometres covered. It was about coming together, riding shoulder to shoulder, and making space for connection on the move. With riders of all backgrounds in attendance, it became clear that Amsterdam’s cycling culture and CIOVITA’s ethos were perfectly aligned. This weekly tradition is just beginning, but it already feels like home. A New Spoke in the Wheel With Wheelrunner now stocking CIOVITA kit, we’re thrilled to call Amsterdam another home for the brand. From community rides to meaningful conversation, the spirit of connection that fuels us in Woodstock is alive and well in Amsterdam. We’re proud to partner with Bas and his team, and even prouder to see our global community continue to grow — one pedal stroke at a time. Whether you’re a local rider or just passing through, come experience the brand in person, connect with the community, and be part of the journey. Find us at Wheelrunner, Rijnstraat 50H, 1078 CH Amsterdam.Images by Kike Molares.
