I've often joked that the friends of mine who announce digital detox endeavors of stepping away from social media always end up coming back. Cold Turkey indefinitely? It's rare. And furthermore, what does it prove? Does it really help or is it a privilege even to be able to make a choice like that?

Well, Matt Klein's essay below caught my eye, and it worked its way up from the ideas section below all the way to the intro.

Unplugging Is Not The Solution You Want
🎧 Listen or Read | Why acceptance is another worthy approach to finding peace online

You can click for the long read or continue for the TL;DR

“The question should not be about how humanely our technologies program human beings, but about how well human beings can program technology.” – Douglas Rushkoff

Klein cites Rushkoff twice in his conclusion & you know I love sharing food for thought lists here. So, rather than aspiring for offline zen, consider digital acceptance & pick up your pen:

  1. 👥 "Denaturalize power by revealing social constructions which are ideas we merely invented, and are not pre-existing laws we must adhere to"
  2. 🕊️ "Trigger agency by reminding ourselves how digital environments offer us endless possibilities of access, authorship and agency, not constraint"
  3. 🤝 "Resocialize people by making it easier to ask for favors, establish rapport or build solidarity, instead of seeing people as members of opposing tribes — we’re all on the same team"
  4. 💡"Cultivate awe by seeding styles of education or art that engender a tighter embrace of the moment"

How's that for some Monday motivation? After all, and I agree, Klein suggests: "Our strength should not be measured by our ability to push away our tech, but by our ability to hold and live with tech in peace."

Now go for a walk or ride & no phone! ; )

with appreciation,

Jon

OMNIUM Introduces Game-Changing Tilting Rack Bracket
Effortlessly tilt or detach an OMNIUM Cargo or Mini-Max rack for quick and convenient home storage, flexible parking options, or more favourable carriage on public transport.

Last week was a double whammy release day on Thursday. Omnium's first batch of rack brackets sold out in 2 hours. Seems like Omnium owners are keen to fit their bikes in tight corners!

How will cycling solve its carbon conundrum?

How will cycling solve its carbon conundrum? - Escape Collective
What is the cycling industry doing about recycling carbon fiber - and is it willing to invest in making the industry more sustainable?

"Recycling carbon fibre has become more achievable with new technologies and resources, and some bike brands have begun to tiptoe into creating both products that are recyclable and systems to put recycling into practice. Those approaches – like Hunt’s recently launched H_Cyclo wheels with recyclable resin technology – are a sign of a potential shift." Nice deep dive, Suvi!

The recently announced shuttering of The Pro's Closet (TPC) should be a cautionary tale for all early stage companies looking to raise capital…

Bikes, trams and trains: Can other countries adopt the Dutch commute?

Bikes, trams and trains: Can other countries adopt the Dutch commute?
The Netherlands relies on dense urban development and a variety of transport options to move workers across the country.

"A worker cycles to the train station every morning, parks their bike in an underground garage, hops on a train and then a tram, and reaches their office within about an hour of leaving their house." Sounds nice, right? Increasingly, more people also agree! Also appealing: Europe's car-free plazas reclaim their former glory.

Ben Chestnut of Mailchimp's 2011 Creative Mornings' Talk

Ben Chestnut | Do What You Love | CreativeMornings/ATL
Mailchimp Founder Ben Chestnut speaks on one of the most poignant topics of all time, quitting your job to do what you love.

I recently saw that Ben stepped down as CEO from Mailchimp, and though I can't call him a friend per se – more an old acquaintance when we were in the same building back in 2011 – but I do feel ok sharing this link here in the 'friends' section! 😉 This talk has always been a big one for me & I've referenced it many times to people, so here I am again. : ) Say hello if you ever visit Amsterdam, Ben!
