As the year draws to a close, I'll be doing some final new business followups to prospective customers and can imagine you'll be doing the same. Setting reminders for every mail I send and then sending compelling messages that elicit responses is crucial. Whether for sales or PR, getting replies is an art.

So, I thought this food for thought from Shane at Farnam Street was pretty neat:

"You have just six seconds to capture someone’s attention — but if you interest them, you earn another twenty to thirty seconds.
Practically, this means you have about thirteen words to hook them and another thirty to forty to deliver your most compelling information.
If your email exceeds 100 words, allocate your editing time wisely: dedicate 40% to perfecting the first sentence, 40% to refining the next 2-3 sentences, and just 20% to polishing the remainder."

This is why, when pitching via email, I always suggest short emails that fit within the screen. Obviously, this newsletter is an exception to the rule! ; )

thank you, as always, for reading,

Jon

Despite the downturn, key indicators that reaffirm e-bikes' success

Morten Kristiansen on LinkedIn: #ebikefuture #sustainability #urbanmobility
As we approach the close of 2024, it’s a moment to pause and reflect on a year marked by uncertainty and challenges. Yet, even in these times, there are…

I've been on the hunt for ways to keep hope alive in 2025 & Morten stacked up a solid list:

📉 The Reality: 2024 has seen a dip in e-bike sales growth compared to the explosive years of the pandemic. Factors such as inflation, tighter consumer budgets, and lingering supply chain disruptions have tempered the pace of adoption.
🌟 The Positives: Despite the downturn, there are key indicators of resilience and innovation that reaffirm the long-term potential of e-bikes:
1️⃣ Policy Support: Governments worldwide are doubling down on sustainable mobility. In 2024, France announced a €1 billion investment in cycling infrastructure, with a major focus on e-bike-friendly cities.
2️⃣ Corporate Adoption: Companies are integrating e-bikes into employee benefits programs. In the Netherlands, employers now offer tax-free e-bike leases as a green commuting solution.
3️⃣ Technological Advancements: E-bike manufacturers are innovating with lighter, longer-lasting batteries and smart technology, making e-bikes more appealing and efficient than ever.
4️⃣ Consumer Trends: While overall sales slowed, e-bike usage for daily commutes rose by 12% globally, showing a behavioral shift that prioritizes cost-effective and eco-friendly transport.

What Makes the Silk Road Mountain Race So Dang Hard?

What Makes the Silk Road Mountain Race So Dang Hard? – Hannah Simon
The Silk Road Mountain Race is regarded as one of the toughest bicycle races in the world. Hannah Simon had her inaugural run at the 2024 race this August and gained insight into what makes an ultra race challenging for her. Read on to hear her discoveries and see the gorgeous views of Kyrgyzstan captured by photographer Nils Laengner.   When I reflect on the 2024 Silk Road Mountain Race (SRMR), the difficulty is not the first thing that comes to mind. My first thought is of the sweeping landscapes from the top of each mountain pass. I see the…

Some good reading if you're considering signing up for SRMR in August of next year. Need hike-a-bike hits to add to your off-the-grid playlist? "From Uzbek disco to Uighur rock: Forgotten sounds of the Silk Road".

From Africa to the world: the rise of cycling apparel brand, Ciovita

From Africa to the world: the rise of cycling apparel brand, Ciovita
While many cyclists assume Ciovita is an Italian cycling apparel company, its origins couldn’t be any further from Europe. The South African brand hails from the bustling, artisanal suburb of Woodstock, located just outside Cape Town’s CBD beneath the backdrop of Table Mountain. The company was founded in 2015 by Andrew Gold - an industry stalwart with 17 years’ worth of experience in the outdoor clothing sector - whose vision has seen the brand elevate itself from a promising start-up to an established force, having recently made waves in Australia, Europe and now the United Kingdom.

I first visited Ciovita's headquarters & factory earlier this year during the Cape Epic race. We kicked off several months ago and have been recently focused on on supporting the local cyclocross series here along with lining up reviews and features like this one. In a sea of spammy spandex, for me, its refreshing to work with a brand that supports grassroots racing and welcomes you into their factory!

Ideas

Head to Sardinia this May for Shardana Bikeventure 4-18 May 2025

Gravel Union recently gave Shardana a nod on their site. This will be more of a Torino-Nice Rally vibe and not a race, though a race is in the works for future editions! Other 2025 recently opened event registrations: Bright Midnight & VIA Chapter II (open until the 15th!)

What an impressive list! Nice to see the Old Man Mountain Axle Pack perched nicely in the Accessory of the Year section!

The world’s 280 million electric bikes and mopeds are cutting demand for oil far more than electric cars
Electric vehicles get all the press – but it’s the smaller unsung two wheelers cutting oil demand the most.

Don't even get me started on self-driving cars. ; )
